What is Ableton Live?

Ableton Live is a powerful and versatile Digital Audio Workstation developed by Ableton, a company founded in 1999 by musicians and software developers. The main goal of Ableton was to create a DAW that could bridge the gap between performance and production. Ableton Live was first released in 2001 and quickly became known for its unique interface and powerful features that cater to both studio production and live performance. Although it may not be the easiest DAW to use, once you learn all of it's ins and outs, it is truly a powerful piece of software that can do almost anything.

While traditional DAWs focus heavily on linear recording and editing, Ableton Live stands out by offering two views: Arrangement View for traditional timeline-based recording and Session View for non-linear, loop-based production. This dual functionality makes it a go-to DAW for electronic music producers, DJs, and live performers, but its flexibility also suits composers, sound designers, and studio engineers across all genres. Another strong feature Ableton Live has is automation. Whether you're looking to shift the pitch of a sound, or trying to create a reverberating effect that gradually increases in intensity, Ableton Live's automaion features make it easy to manipulate sounds to your liking.
